The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. According to the United States Bureau of Justice, 7,225,800 people were on probation, in jail or prison, or on parole in December, 2009. These numbers do not include the nearly 100,000 children in juvenile facilities. In 2009, in the United States, there were an estimated 4.3 million violent crimes committed, 15.6 million property crimes and 133,000 personal thefts. No matter where you live, it is rare indeed to not be impacted by crime, whether you are the criminal, victim or loved one of. When crime occurs, insurance rates increase, prices skyrocket in every form of industry and mental anguish elevates. Our Mission is to help reduce crime and recidivism (those who return to jail). We have already witnessed inmates making life changes as a result of studying and integrating the Mayan Messages. Will you be part of the soul-ution? |

AM I MY BROTHER'S KEEPER?
that the thoughts and actions of one affects all of us. Thus, if we can assist just one of our brothers or sisters to turn from negative thoughts, words, deeds and emotions, we effectively help increase the level of love and peace on the entire globe. These inmates will know these books were donated by many people. Perhaps this will be the first time that someone does something positive for him/her. We never know when something as simple as a hello is enough to turn around the life of one who is downtrodden. The vast majority of inmates are illiterate, mentally ill, innocent or come from a childhood background of sexual, mental and/or physical abuse. Most of these children had no role models, no one to give them a sense of safety, no way to vent their anger or ways to cope with the guilt and shame. Many joined gangs, their first experience of "belonging" or because it was safer to do so. Often, even as young children, alcohol was used to drown their sorrows. The past two generations have seen a remarkable increase in home-made drugs, many of which are addictive after one or two ingestions. As a special education teacher, I got quite an education on the effects of drugs taken by either the father or the mother when the child was in utero. Many of these children are now in the juvenile and prison system. The problem does not only lie in the lifestyle of the parents raising these children, but it has adversely affected their internal body chemistry by having these drugs in their system during their sensitive prenatal history. So, why are we surprised at the increasing amount of drug abuse and violent crimes? It is obvious the needs of many young children are not being met. Then the hormones kick in during the teen years, unleashing a whole new series of problems, especially for those with unresolved emotional issues. Soon, these inmates will be your neighbors. Many are your family members. Would you like to be part of the soul-tion to help your fellow man learn to empower him/herself? That is what the Mayan Messages are doing. Inmates who choose to study the Messages are having "Aha!" moments, realizing the error of their ways, healing deep emotional wounds and resolving to change their behaviors. Those who do get released back into society not only have to deal with the outcome of their choices, they are now labeled and will have an even harder time than the average person in locating work and a place to live. Often their families have moved on, leaving them on a solo journey of recovery and discovery. Many lack the social skills, job skills and ability to break their alcohol or drug habit. Some are forced back into old routines because of a desperate need for food, shelter and clothing. I share all of this with you, because frankly, most of us don't give a second thought to the humanity of prisoners. An untold number of us have been victims of crime and it is all too easy to get hardened and judge all inmates harshly. The saying, "Don't judge another 'til you've walked a mile in his moccasins" comes to my mind. The Mayan Messages provide survival skills in a world filled with chaos. Can we count on you to join us in reaching out to inmates, with the Intention of creating a better world for all of us? |
JAIL FEEDBACK Last summer, I sent three copies of the Mayan Messages to a jail at the request of a Corrections Officer. Within a week, the inmates chose to use the book as a group study guide. On March 3, 2011, I asked for an update, this is what he emailed back to me.
are in big demand. Many have reported that it has changed their entire outlook on life thereby helping them not to reoffend and instead join in the great awakening that's changing our planet. What a WONDERFUL shift in consciousness is happening during this "shift of ages". Talk about "shift!" When I read that, I had a shift inside myself. I started looking at many of the objects around my home that I wasn't using and how they could be converted into funds for the prison vision. That weekend, I had a "fundraising" rummage which gave me an additional $500 to put towards the project. I was blown away, expecting to make maybe $200! It was the most amazing rummage sale I have ever had (and I have had some epic ones)! This inspired me to have a second sale with items donated by friends, which netted $1400! Would you be interested in doing the same in your neighborhood, to support our Prison Vision? |

INMATE FEEDBACK On August 18, 2011, we were delighted to receive our first letter from an inmate after discovering the Mayan Messages in their prison library. It is anticipated that many inmates will request a personal copy of the prison edition of the Mayan Messages. An invitation to do so is on the first page of the book. If you would like to financially support this endeavor, please let us know! This section is devoted to sharing inmates' correspondence with you. |
